The Weatherford Eagles play their final non-district opponent in 2022 and it’s a familiar one — Elgin.

The Eagles and Owls have played every year since 2012, when both schools were in Class 4A for the first time and placed in the same district. While The Owls now have made the jump to 5A, the two are meeting again the next two seasons as non-district games.

The series is close, with Weatherford having 6-4 lead all time. Elgin won last year’s game, 33-27 and coaches know this game won’t be easy.

Weatherford coach Reagan Roof spoke about Elgin following the exciting last-second win against El Reno this past Friday.

“How do we handle success. We got a win and a young team. We have to turn around and go right back to work Monday. Elgin’s a good football team. They beat us last year and they’re much improved from last year. They were young last year, so it’ll be a good challenge. We have to go to their place so it’ll be interesting to see how a young football team responds and goes and plays on the road next week,” Roof said.

Defensive coordinator Taylor Sossamon said Elgin won’t be an easy team to prepare for.

“I think they have a talented young quarterback. He was a freshman last year, but started all year. I think they have a running back that runs really hard. They’re going to be a little more spread than El Reno was. It’ll be a different type of challenge, but I’m excited for it,” Sossamon said.

Kickoff is 7 p.m. at Elgin this coming Friday.

Cash Jennings, No. 20, and Carter Teasley, No. 11, combine to make a tackle in Friday’s game against El Reno.
