Its’s almost time for New Year’s Eve and Police Chief Louis Flowers will be giving out free bus rides to help transport residents to and from their home safely as a way to support the community.

“My wife and I do this and we drive the Pioneer Center shuttle bus. The mayor encourages all service heads to do a service project for the city. If individuals call the police department at (580) 772-7791 and ask for the shuttle bus then my dispatch will radio me or call my wife. We will pick anybody up within a two-mile radius of Weatherford. We don’t want anybody to get arrested. We want everybody to be safe. Some years it’s busy and some years it’s not. I also encourage the taxi services in town. One year it was so full I couldn’t keep up,” Flowers said.

Flowers said the bus driving idea originally stemmed from former mayor, Gary Rader.

“It started about 29 years ago, it wasn’t originally my idea. Our former mayor, Gary Rader, drove the Red River bus and he would give free rides out. When I became chief I started it back up. It is something personal between my wife and I. We wouldn’t be able to do this without Mayor Mike Brown’s help and I appreciate him letting me do this,” Flowers said.

All tips provided on the bus will be gifted to the Pioneer Senior Citizens Center for Meals on Wheels.
