Third land run opens western Oklahoma
April 12, 1892, President Benjamin Harrison issued his third
proclamation declaring that the 4.3 million acres of former Cheyenne and Arapaho territory be opened to settlement, which included Custer County.
This came as a result of government issued allotments to individual Native Americans in the previous land run.
